Description

The omnibus collects four complete and unabridged mystery thrillers by the author Dick Francis. All four novels are classic horse-racing thrillers. Each focuses on a different profession while exploring the dangerous underbelly of the racing world.
Odds Against (1965)

Sid Halley, a champion jockey forced into retirement after a devastating fall shatters his hand. Despondent over his lost career, Sid reluctantly becomes an investigator for a detective agency. He is tasked by his former father-in-law with looking into suspicious financial activity surrounding the Seabury racecourse. He discovers a ruthless property developer trying to intentionally ruin the track to force a sale. Sid must overcome his physical limitations and depression to stop the scheme.

Flying Finish (1966)

Lord Henry Grey, an aristocratic amateur jockey and pilot who is bored with his desk job. Seeking excitement, Henry takes a job as a groom air-transporting thoroughbred horses across the globe. He initially loves the work, but things darken when a valuable horse dies mid-flight and a colleague vanishes. Upon realizing his two predecessors also disappeared under mysterious circumstances, Henry turns detective to uncover an international smuggling ring before he becomes the next victim.

Blood Sport (1967)

Gene Hawkins, a clinically depressed, lethal intelligence operative and “fixer” for his boss. While on a much-needed vacation, Gene is recalled to help a wealthy American friend whose priceless breeding stallion has been stolen in Kentucky. This marks the third high-profile horse kidnapping in recent years. Gene travels across America and into the Canadian Rockies, tracking a vast network of extortionists, murderers, and thieves to rescue the animal.

Rat Race (1970)

Matt Shore, a divorced commercial airline pilot down on his luck. Stripped of his big-jet career, Matt scrapes by flying a small air-taxi service that ferries owners, trainers, and jockeys to English racecourses. Minutes after making a forced emergency landing, his plane is destroyed by a bomb. Realizing one of his regular racing passengers was the intended target, Matt must identify the killer quickly. He is scheduled to fly the exact same group of people over the following weeks, keeping him directly in the bomber’s crosshairs.
